Sour Puss
Sour Puss was part of an animated comedy duo, paired with Gandy Goose is a series of Terrytoon cartoons in the 1940s.
A typical cartoon Tuxie-type cat, Sour Puss originally appeared as a solo character in a 1939 short based on the poem “The Owl and the Pussycat.” Later in 1939’s Hook, Line, and Sinker, he was teamed up with Gandy Goose, who was the sillier of the two. Sour Puss, whose gruff voice was based on Jimmy Durante, was also the Ollie to Gandy’s Stan, in that he was usually irked by Gandy’s behavior. The twosome appeared in Terrytoons until 1950 and in a analog comic book series. They later appeared in Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures in 1987-88.
Interestingly, when a new Terrytoons series pilot, Curbside, was broadcast in 1999, Gandy and Sour Puss were absent from the gallery of Terrytoons regulars. This was said to be because the animators wanted to avoid comparisons to the popular Ren and Stimpy show.
